The President of the Federació Motociclista d’Andorra (FMA), Mr Josep Punti, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) Mr Steve Aeschlimann, held a press conference today in Andorra la Vella to announce officially the dates of the 2017 FIM General Assembly and Gala Ceremony in the company of the main sponsors of the Event: the Municipality of Andorra la Vella, the Government of Andorra and Andbank. The Mayor of Andorra la Vella, Mrs Conxita Marsol, announced that the capital of the Principality of Andorra is ready to become the "engine capital" and that “this event will bring the country international renown and help Andorra to become a household word all over the world.” The Minister of Tourism and Commerce of Andorra, Mr Francesc Camp, highlighted the “international media impact of the event and the importance of associating ‘brand Andorra’ with the world motorcycling elite for a two year period (2017 and 2018).”

Steve Aeschlimann explained that the FIM chose Andorra on account of its experience in organising international competitions, especially in Trial, and because of the FMA’s policy of organising environmentally friendly and sustainable events, which has earned it the FIM Environmental Award on two separate occasions. He also highlighted the country’s infrastructure and hotel capacity.

The FMA has organised, among other things, 20 Trial events at World level and two editions of the Trial des Nations (2008 and 2014), 3 World Supermoto events, 1 World Enduro event and 4 rounds of the CET Spanish Championship.

Mr Aeschlimann explained that the FIM General Assembly is the most important event in the FIM’s year, when the 113 affiliated National Motorcycling Federations take important decisions, for example to amend the FIM Statutes or the FIM Sporting Code. From 2010 onwards, the FIM General Assembly has been followed by the FIM Gala Ceremony at which the World Champions in all the FIM disciplines are called on stage to receive their medals. The most recent edition, in 2016, was held in the German capital, Berlin.

Tourism and Commerce Minister Mr Francesc Camp particularly emphasised the considerable media impact of the event, that can be quantified as 500 hours of television. The Mayor of Andorra la Vella, Mrs Conxita Marsol, pointed out that Andorra la Vella has splendid facilities for hosting major events and a high-quality hotel infrastructure ideal for hosting both the FIM General Assembly and the FIM Gala Ceremony.

Andorra to host FIM GA and Gala 2017-2018

The FIM Board of Directors has chosen to entrust the organisation of the FIM General Assembly and Gala to the Federació Motorcyclista d'Andorra (FMA) for two successive years.

Andorra is one of Europe’s smallest sovereign States and is bordered by France and Spain. The capital, Andorra la Vella, is the highest in Europe at 1 023 metres above sea level. It brings together a community with a lively and thriving cultural life, as reflected by theatrical performances and productions with great names from the world stage and a host of other prestigious events.

Affiliated to the FIM since 1987, the FMA has organised many rounds of the FIM Trial, SuperMoto and Enduro World Championships as well as the Trial des Nations. It is also a two-time winner of the FIM Environment Prize.

FIM CEO Ignacio Verneda welcomes this decision: “I am very happy to see the organisation of the FIM General Assembly and Gala entrusted to a very active federation such as the Federació Motociclista d'Andorra. It is great news for the FIM family and the motorcycling world. The FMA has some thirty years’ experience in organising sporting and cultural events at international level and is strongly committed to sustainable sport. Andorra offers us an exceptional natural setting and I am certain that these events will be a success!”

Josep Punti Tigel, President of the Federació Motociclista d'Andorra (FMA), also welcomes this announcement: “It is a great honour for my country and for me to be host to the FIM GA and Gala for the upcoming two years. Andorra is a small country situated in the Pyrenees, and tourism and business are our main sources of revenue. The organisation of international events on this scale is an ideal opportunity for us to help the largest possible number of people to discover our country. This project has come to fruition thanks to the economic support of the Municipal Council of Andorra la Vella, the Ministry of Tourism of the Government of Andorra (through Andorra Turisme) and the Crèdit Andorrà bank. We are looking forward to being your hosts next year!
