Rene Hofer

2016 FIM 85cc Junior Motocross World Champion

Born on 4 January 2002 in Steinbach, Austria

Rene Hofer (KTM) could not have done any more in 2016 to flag his name as ‘one to watch’ in the fiercely competitive first stages of the professional motocross ‘pyramid’. The Austrian – riding a KTM, naturally – was dominant in three competitions this year and was the fastest talent in Europe on an 85cc motorcycle. FIM Junior 85cc Motocross World Championship honours were earned with aplomb at the Orlyonok circuit in Russia back in August. Despite promise from rivals as far afield as Japan, Latvia, Estonia and Russia, Hofer was on a different level and claimed the first race chequered flag by over thirty seconds. The second race was a little tighter but the 14-year-old got the job done.

A month earlier Hofer had gathered another double win at the Loket circuit in the Czech Republic and had the gold plate of the EMX85 European Championship already on the mantelpiece by the time the challenge of Orlyonok came around. Hofer now has to move to the next level and the speed and weight of the 125s are calling; he certainly graduates with top grades and a wealth of potential.
