The FIM Sidecar Motocross World Championship has a new star and a new World Champion in the shape of 22-year-old Marvin Vanluchene, who claimed the 2018 title alongside experienced passenger Ben van den Bogaart after a season full of drama from the opening round.

Forced to start from the back of the grid at Oss following a qualifying infringement, last year’s World Champion Etienne Bax mounted an incredible fightback only to crash out of second place and suffer a double break to his collarbone that effectively wrecked his title defence. 2017 runner-up Valentin Giraud then saw his passenger Elvijs Mucenieks suffer a broken back during morning warm-up for the third round in Talavera de la Reina, Spain and when Dutch legend and early series leader Daniel Willemsen was also injured in a freak road accident, the way was open for the young guns to capitalise.

Guided by the experienced hand of three-time champion Van den Bogaart, Vanluchene did exactly that, taking his first win in Spain with further victories in the Ukraine, Czech Republic – where he scored the double –,Latvia (Cesis), Estonia and Switzerland. Meanwhile 21-year-old Koen Hermans, who also had a World Champion passenger in the shape of Nicolas Musset, also emerged as a championship contender, pushing for the red plate with wins from the opening round.

Hermans proved to be the strongest threat to Vanluchene but after the pair shared wins in Estonia, the Belgian proved to be the more consistent finisher and despite a double for the Dutchman in Latvia (Stelpe), Vanluchene and Van Den Bogaart were able to wrap up the title in style with a second leg victory at the penultimate round in Switzerland.

The 2017 FIM Sidecar Motocross World Championship once again featured a packed calendar of fourteen events across ten European countries, starting with the first of two visits to the Netherlands that bookended the season. Perhaps unsurprisingly it was a Dutchman who coped best with the soft, fine sand of the Oldebroek track, former champion Etienne Bax and his French team-mate Nicolas Musset delighting the home crowd by winning both of the weekend's two races in convincing fashion.

Fellow Dutchman and ten-time World Champion Daniel Willemsen, riding with Etienne's younger brother Robbie as passenger, opened his 2017 victory account at round two in the Ukraine, before Frenchman Valentin Giraud, who returned to the series with his Latvian passenger Elvijs Mucenieks after missing last season, staked his title credentials with a double win on home soil at Chaumont in round four.

Giraud's challenge faltered over the following rounds with reliability issues and an inconsistent starting technique, allowing Bax and Musset to claim doubles at Iffendic in France and Strassbessenbach in Germany as they extended their series lead. However, Giraud and Mucenieks then capitalised on a drought of seven races without a win for Bax and Musset, winning five of them to haul themselves back into contention with a couple of rounds to go.

Bax and Musset bounced back, though, to take another double win at the penultimate round in Rudersburg, Germany, which put them on the brink of a title they were able to wrap up in front of another big home crowd at Markelo.

2016 FIM Sidecar Motocross World Champion

Jan Hendrickx and Ben Van Den Bogaart were crowned FIM Sidecar Motocross World Champions in unexpected fashion in 2016, bouncing back from a breakdown in the first race of the opening round in the Netherlands to mount a consistent season. The pair's Belgian compatriot Ben Adriaenssen and his Latvian teammate Lauris Daiders put themselves in strong contention after dominating that opening Grand Prix at Oss, maintaining good form in the first half of the season as defending World Champions Etienne and Robbie Bax struggled to make an ambitious new project competitive.

The Baxs’ fellow Dutchmen Daniel Willemsen and Peter Beunk also made a strong start to lead the series after the second event but their challenge was hit by injury, as was that of France's Valentin Giraud and Nicolas Musset, who had moved to the top thanks partly to three straight wins when Giraud hurt his knee in Genk. Adriaenssen was the next to suffer the curse of the leader, when his injury in Kivioli combined with a first victory for Hendrickx and Van den Bogaart, propelling them to the top of the standings. But the curse was broken and the Belgians hung on to finish the season on top. After being a title contender for many years, Hendrickx finally took world laurels!
