2021 FIM MOTO2 GRAND PRIX WORLD CHAMPION
DOWN UNDER WONDER!
There is no doubt that a passion for motorsport is in the blood and there is no better illustration of this than awesome Australian Remy Gardner.
The twenty-three-year-old is the son of Wayne Gardner, the 1987 FIM 500cc Grand Prix World Champion – and following his stand-out season in this year’s FIM Moto2 Grand Prix series there are now two World titles in the family!
Gardner Jnr started riding off-road at the age of four, competing in motocross, enduro, dirt track and flat track disciplines before taking to the Tarmac aged ten.
A national youth champion in his first year on slicks, he travelled to Europe where he finished second in the FIM Pre-GP Moto3 championship before making a permanent move to Spain to follow his dream of emulating his father.
Making his full-time Moto3 debut in 2015, in 2016 he scored his first Moto2 points and three years later he claimed a career-first podium in the class when he finished second in Argentina.
In 2020 he finished on the podium four times including his first win in the class at the final race of the season in Portugal and he carried this momentum through the off-season and into this year with eight podiums in the first nine rounds.
A further four podiums followed and this amazing consistency – not to mention his season total of five race victories – gave him the title by four points.
Next year will be his most testing season to date as he moves into MotoGP. It is sure to be a steep learning curve, though racing at the highest level runs in the family!
