CONSISTENCY IS KEY

Victory at the opening round of the 2020 FIM Moto3 Grand Prix World Championship in Qatar at the beginning of March was the perfect start for Spain’s Albert Arenas (KTM), however COVID-19 restrictions meant his momentum stalled and he had to wait until July before underlining his undoubted class by making it two wins from two starts when he crossed the line first at Jerez.

Arenas recovered from a DNF at round three with second in the Czech Republic and a win in Austria, though the rider who was already looking like a title favourite then had to endure a run of four GPs without a podium finish until he came home third at the Grand Prix de France.

It would be his last top-three finish of the season and Arenas then faced a nervous final third of the season as his rivals closed in, but he held his nerve to win the championship with his twelfth-placed finish at the decider in Portugal earning him the crown by just four points from Italy’s Tony Arbolino (Honda) who claimed the silver medal on a tie-break from Ai Ogura (Honda) from Japan.

Consistency was key to Arenas’ victory this season and he will need much more of the same as he makes the move into Moto2 in 2021 and continues to climb the ladder to success, hoping to emulate his fellow countryman Joan Mir who went from Moto3 champion to MotoGP king in just three years.
