2022 FIM Supersport 300 World Champion
DYNAMITE DIAZ!
In just his second full season contesting the FIM Supersport 300 World Championship, talented teenager Alvaro Diaz – Yamaha produced a dominant performance to win the title with one race still remaining.
It has been a record-breaking year for the nineteen-year-old from Valencia on the Mediterranean coast of Spain who finished twentieth in the championship in 2020 before taking a back seat last season with just a couple of guest rides which netted him three top-five finishes including a first-ever podium.
Diaz kicked off 2022 as he meant to go on, backing up a second with a career-first win at Motorland Aragon in Spain in April. A crash in free practice two weeks later at Assen’s TT Circuit appeared to unsettle him and he was eleventh in the opener before missing out on victory in a photo finish in race two.
Next time out at Estoril he was sixth in race one, but a first-lap crash in the second race saw him cross the line twenty-sixth.
Diaz bounced back with two-one finishes at Misano in mid-June to reclaim the series lead at the halfway point and a pair of third-placed finishes at round five in the Czech Republic at the end of July strengthened his advantage.
Following the summer break Diaz maintained his momentum when he ran three-two at Magny-Cours in early September with his performance setting new series records for the most race podium finishes in a season and the longest unbroken run of race podiums.
Heading into the penultimate round at the Circuit de Barcelona with a forty-point championship lead, Diaz extended this by another ten points with a second-place finish in race one backed up by a fourth in race two.
He sealed the deal with seventh in the opening race at the final round at Portimao in Portugal before signing off with a second.
