MAKING HISTORY!

FIM Supersport 300 World Champion back in 2020, dynamic Dutchman Jeffrey Buis – Kawasaki has had to endure two years without adding to his title tally before he returned to the top this season when he regained the crown at the end of a nail-bitingly tense series and created history as the division’s only two-time winner.

Staged over eight rounds, the 2023 FIM Supersport 300 World Championship got under way in April at the legendary TT Circuit Assen where on home ground Buis struggled on his return to the class after contesting last year’s FIM Supersport World Championship and was eighth in the opening race before retiring from race two.

He was back on track following round two in Barcelona where he won the first race and was third in race two, however a second race retirement in Misano dealt his title ambitions a serious blow and despite running three-four next time out in Imola he still had it all to do as the championship moved into its second half.

A pair of solid finishes inside the top ten at Most in the Czech Republic added to his points total and at round six at the famed Magny-Cours in France in early September he staked his claim to the crown with a dominant double win, a result he backed up at the penultimate round at Aragon in Spain where he followed up a strong second in the opening race with victory second time out.

With the title going down to the wire at the series decider at Portugal’s Algarve International Circuit at the start of October, Buis had one hand on the silverware and he eventually came out on top, although his winning margin of just seven points over Spain’s José Luis Pérez Gonzaléz – Kawasaki shows just how close this class was.

BUIS BREAKS THROUGH

In just his second year in the FIM Supersport 300 World Championship, Jeffrey Buis (Kawasaki) raced to the title after a breakthrough season that saw him climb from fourteenth at the end of 2019 all the way to the top of the tree just twelve months later.

Following a disappointing start to the 2020 championship in Spain, the results began to come and it became a season of firsts for the Dutch teenager with his first podium finish followed by his first win and – ultimately – his first world title!

Putting his Jerez result at the start of August firmly behind him, one week later at Portugal’s Portimão Circuit he backed up a sensational second in the first race with fourth in the second leg. The focus then shifted back to Spain and the MotorLand Aragón track for back-to-back rounds and it was here that he established his credentials as a potential champion with a double victory followed a week later by a two-one scorecard.

Another solid pair of scores followed as the series switched to Barcelona where he went five-three before a commanding one-two performance at the penultimate round at Magny-Cours in France at the start of October allowed him to clinch the championship two weeks later with sixth in the opening race of the season showdown at Estoril in Portugal.
